Holding the Line in Parenting

A Place to Fail

When your kids fail, think of it as a gift that will help them become a better version of their true selves: Ninety percent of parenting is mental, the other half is physical. In other words, it takes all of you and a little more. Parenting is no joke and lends itself to forming humans who can eventually …

Resolving to Endure

Parenting requires endurance. Sometimes that involves running, other times it’s walking, limping or even crawling. I ran a 5k once. Once is the operative word. I might do it again some day when the faint smell of impending death finally leaves my nostrils. The race was fine, it was the runner who had a problem.…

Leading Your Kids to Serve

Want to know how to help your children connect with God and with the local church? Model for them how to serve. I grew up hating church. I didn’t have any theological problems with church, I was just bored. Sitting still for more than ten minutes was torture, and sometimes our services went on for two hours!…

Surprise Prayer Rides - HomeFront Magazine

An easy & simple way to pray together as a family. When I was growing up, prayer was a big deal in my family. It was part of our everyday lives. I was a preacher’s kid at a small Spanish church, and my parents often invited my siblings and me to join them as they prayed for others in our congregation. I can remember feeling anxious …

One Marble At A Time

“When I look back, it’s not the “big” moments that I remember most. It’s the smaller everyday moments that stand out.” So I’ve started this blog post like 14 different ways (not exaggerating). It just might be the most challenging one yet. Once you know what it’s about maybe you’ll understand why. I’ve been told th…

How to Respond When Your Kid Acts Out

How to respond when your kids act out. I was the best parent before I had kids. I just knew that I was going to do things differently. I was pretty prideful about it, let’s be real. It would not be my kids watching a video on a phone in…

The Cup - HomeFront Magazine

It’s only when we stop running for the love and respect from others that we’re able to fully and honestly receive the gracious love God gives, and begin spilling over into the lives of our kids. Like many of the people throughout Scripture, I all too often settle for much less than what God intended. It’s no wonder the apostle Paul knelt down to pray desperately for the Christians in Ephesus to be “filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” We all want to be filled and we …

Not "Dad Enough" - HomeFront Magazine

Your kids don't need you to be perfect. But they do need you to be a dad who needs a savior. It’s one of those days: at the office before dawn so I can leave work early to help with my son’s practice. Or at least that was the hope. Instead, I find myself still at work, texting my wife to take him instead. This means she has to wake the littles from their nap, dinner …

New Remember Verses stared last Sunday in SRKids. Here are the new verses:

Preschool- Isaiah 30:21
Elementary- Isaiah 40:29

Sibling Warfare

“We can’t force our kids to be best friends. But we can create homes and opportunities for them to learn to appreciate the things that make them maddeningly different and inspiringly unique.” Three years ago, when I found out I was pregnant with my second boy, I was relieved. I already had one, so the immediate thought in my mind was, “I got this. I know boys. This will be my oldest son…

Forgiveness Rocks

Let your kids know that when they’ve been hurt by other people’s words or actions, they have a choice to make: Why choose forgiveness: As a child, growing up, I liked rocks. I liked to collect rocks. Not sure why, maybe it was a result of watching too much of The Flintstones as a child. I had this habit of gathering rocks everywh…
