Kugana: Equipping disadvantaged youth to become leaders in their pursuits

KUGANA, COMPLIES WITH CRA GUIDELINES FOR NON-PROFITS THROUGH OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN MISSION SERVICES. ICMS HAS DIRECTION AND CONTROL OF THE RESOURCES DONATED TO ICMS ON BEHALF OF OUR MINISTRY AND HOLDS US ACCOUNTABLE.

A leadership training system that is easily replicate-able. We train facilitators who lead roundtable groups. We keep the facilitators accountable by following up every 10 weeks of the course.

Mission: The U.N. tells us there is 1 million orphans in a nation of 11 million people. We are going to help bring change to a whole nation!!! Our mission is to help Rwandan's orphans and community leaders develop biblically based leadership principles as a lifestyle, teaching them to value themselves, and become one of the best assets a family, a company and a country can have.

Local Judges in the Commercial Court system

http://www.kugana.com/blog/2018/8/9/local-judges-in-the-commercial-court-system

Pastor Norman introduced me to Judge Esther at a Church service.

Judge Esther is a Commercial Court Judge in Rwanda and she is part of larger group of judges and court clerks that meet on Mondays for lunch to provide each other with fellowship, encouragement, and support.

As we discussed the current situations that the courts typically face, it became very clear to me that presenting the Biblical based chapters of Values and Principles was a viable tool to create the improvement that was needed.

Narrow Road House

http://www.kugana.com/blog/2018/7/19/narrow-road-house

We were doing a lesson on Honesty.

This young man was very attentive and engaged, but at the end he put his hand up and asked, “so you mean to tell me that we should be honest in everything we do?

“Do you see that big house up on the hill there?” I nodded that I had observed that very BIG house on the hill.

He continued, “we all know what he did to get that place and we KNOW that he wasn’t honest in all of his dealings!”

“Also, if and when the police come to my door and they ask me where my Dad is, because they want to arrest him because he stole food from the vendor. You want me to tell them where he is? That is our only food source as there is no work available for my dad, so if he goes to jail, we are all hungry again! “

The young man said, “so, tell me again why I am supposed to be Honest?”

If you were in my position, how would you have answered this young man?

My wife Karen and I (Gary Janzen) had a great opportunity to visit Rwanda for the first time in May 2010, after being in Uganda with Compassion Canada viewing their work in that country.

We were able to tack on our side trip to Rwanda to see first hand some of the things that our adopted Rwandese son Jackson, was telling us about his home country Rwanda. The whole experience did not disappoint!

Karen and I were treated with great honor and respect while in Rwanda, and we felt very humbled by the servants of God that we had the privilege to stay with and follow in Compassion Canada’s ministry endeavors. It gave us perspective on who we are, what we have, and what we could do to help in very impactful ways.

Karen and I came to the place that we could, in our simple skill sets have a great impact on a nation, but what could that be?

Development begins in the heart of a single person! Teach them to lead based on kingdom principals and you will redeem a culture and change a country!

From our family to yours, we wish you all a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!

Being a strong leader is full of challenges and struggles, if we focus on the core principals of leadership founded on biblical principals, we can take hope form the reality that Christ is our strength!

Isaiah 41:10 - fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Meet our new staff person in Rwanda! Her name is Denise Kayitesi and she will be taking on the administration responsibilities of Kugana 10-40 Leadership Society in country there.
That includes training and following up with round table groups that are already meeting, as well as the new groups that are forming regularly.
We need to raise monthly support to keep Denise functioning there for us. Would you consider a monthly donation of $25, $50 or $100 to help us reach our goal of $550 per month?
Click on the 'Donate' button which will take you directly to our page for donations.
Denise is an amazing young lady who we met early on in our travels to Rwanda and has been a faithful consistent friend over all the years. She has a passion to see her nation building with values and principles out of the book of Proverbs and has an infectious way of connecting with people.
She is doing an amazing job, and we need to support her!

We greatly appreciate your prayerful consideration to joining us in the very exciting future of Kugana in Rwanda!

Stay tuned as we will be rolling out the fruits of the latest video/picture efforts from the latest trip this past May. We should be starting to show these in mid to late July.

First Vlog from Africa!

[05/10/17]   Please pray for good rental transportation as there is high demand because of an all African conference being held until Friday. We had one today, but am looking for the next couple of days to rent something.
PRAY! and PRAY more! Thanks

[05/08/17]   Just getting ready to go to sleep after I have put away everything from my found and delivered bag!!! They found it in Brussels and rushed it out to me today!
In other news, I had another great day of meetings and preparing for the latter end of the week when the video duo of guys come to do interviews, shoot a bunch of pictures and meet the wonderful people of Rwanda!
Pray that all things will work as the logistics can be challenging, but they are seasoned as well so it will be awesome and productive!

[05/06/17]   Here am I being a little frustrated as one piece of luggage didn't ever make it to Kigali. It is kind of like the internet, it comes and goes without warning. The airline hasn't been able to even locate it so I am starting a list of items to bring a value to the bag for replacement! Otherwise, the trip and first day has been amazing. The last leg of the trip, two friends from Kigali were on the same flight so I had some time to catch up even on the way down, pretty cool. The schedule is filling up nicely, the reception (other than the internet reception, did I mention my frustration?) has been over the top. I have an amazing host family, great location, and great old and new friends making this an amazing adventure. There are some very exciting opportunities lining up with regards to a location in central downtown to do regular trainings for the Global Priority material, so continue to pray for that. It is certainly more that I had even hoped for, which shouldn't surprise me serving the Lord for as long as I have. I will continue to post as much as possible to keep you 'in the loop' from over here. Thanks for your prayer and support, it is so vital and appreciated. The video team will be leaving to join me soon and will arrive on Wednesday morning. Pray for their safe travel and that all of their bags get through as well. Bye for now!

[05/02/17]   I am leaving Tomorrow morning for Rwanda! I'll be reconnecting with all my friends and will be making new ones as we continue to build 'Kugana' - to move forward with force!

Kugana: Equipping disadvantaged youth to become leaders in their pursuits

Excited about what we can be part of in Rwanda!! Love the vision

Spent the morning with over 40 boys (supposed to be 32) and will be with them each morning I am here from now on. When you are dealing with street kids and broken home kids, I was amazed at their ability to sit and focus for a couple of hours. Ya I'm not the most engaging speaker, but there is certainly something special happening. I think God is stirring something deep within these young men, future leaders, husbands and business professionals.

A typical day in my Rwandan hood!

[11/16/15]   I have arrived safely, had a great series of flights, 3 in total but each one I have plenty of space and great sleep opportunities as I only had 1:20 layover in Amsterdam.
There has been some power serge's as well as internet difficulties for me to access this, and when I did have access and power, my time was limited.
I am glad to be able to flex because things in Rwanda can challenge your patience at times. What it does do is show me that what Kugana brings is very important to assist the future leaders to be people of integrity and character. This is the future that we all are asking for. Let's put in the work to create the environment to see this come to pass!
I have met with the vice Mayor and am getting a letter of recommendation from her to assist me in accessing other groups.
I will be starting the daily trainings at Les Enfients De Deu orphanage tomorrow. They have 32 young men that are signing up to participate. I am So Excited to speak into these young men's minds and hearts!
I have many other opportunities to teach and train but will be selective in which to take and which to delay to the next trip in 2016.
Thanks for your prayers and support, much love!

General information

The Rwandan genocide tore apart the economic, cultural, and moral fabric of the nation. Currently there is great rehabilitation on all aspects, however there are still many disadvantaged youths that are not being helped. For more than 7 years it has been our duty to focus on developing high capacity, values-driven leaders, so that these youth can have a better advantage in life. Gary and his Kugana team are dedicated to be parents who equip the most disadvantaged youth to become adult leaders. In Kinyarwanda (Rwanda's official language), Kugana means to "move forward with force". Our vision is to equip every orphaned child in the Nation of Rwanda with the strong foundation of proven universal values and principles that have brought life to people throughout the centuries.
