Independent Order of Rechabites - IOR

The Independent Order of Rechabites (IOR) is a fraternal order that is dedicated to the cause of temperance.

The Independent Order of Rechabites (IOR), also known as the Sons and Daughters of Rechab, is a fraternal order and friendly society that is dedicated to the cause of temperance. The IOR was founded in England in 1835, as an integral part of the temperance movement, to promote total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. A branch was established in the United States in 1842, and the Order remains active in Australia. Before one can join the Rechabites, a document must be signed swearing that the proposed member and his family will not drink any alcoholic beverages. This document is known as The Pledge and represents a solemn promise. The initials "IOR" on a tombstone may indicate that the deceased was a member of the Order. Website:
