Center for Action and Contemplation

Father Richard Rohr begins this week’s Daily Meditations on Franciscan Ecological Wisdom by sharing an excerpt from Pope Francis’ papal encyclical “Laudato Si’,” which highlights the example of St. Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis writes, “[St. Francis] was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature, and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace…. [Francis’] response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister [or brother] united to him by bonds of affection…. If we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously. The poverty and austerity of Saint Francis were no mere veneer of asceticism, but something much more radical: a refusal to turn reality into an object simply to be used and controlled.”
Most of us have been asked to simplify our lifestyles over the past few months. Have you also been able to imbue your choices with deeper meaning? How might contemplation allow us to connect with the Franciscan practices of simplicity and reverence for the earth? Read more: http://ow.ly/MK5L50zHUck

One of the most powerful things you can do my loves, is learn to find the pause between what is happening and your response to it.
Begin to practice waiting, sitting back, before you react to something, you actually will be strengthening your action muscle and diminishing your reaction conditioned behavior.
Reacting to people, places, and things puts you in a very weak place, pausing, and choosing how you will act is powerful.
This quote from one of my favorite people ever, Viktor Frankl changed my life over 30 years ago: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Theologian and pastor Bruce G. Epperly writes of Julian of Norwich, “Julian was painfully aware of life’s contingency. She no doubt saw thousands die from the plague…. She survived a life-threatening illness. Still she trusted God’s promise, ‘You will be safe. You will not be overcome.’” Through Julian’s writings, he says we come to understand that “God holds the future in God’s hands; what mortals plan for evil, God can turn into an opportunity for growth. God your Mother will protect you and God your Father will guide you through all the seasons of life.”

Father Richard Rohr reminds us that, ““In a way we may find difficult to understand today, prayer was absolutely essential for people in earlier times…. Mystics, saints, and everyday people would have spent much of their time earnestly bringing their pain and longings to God. Surely, if we are willing to do the same, we may find some measure of solace.”

We invite you to spend some time in prayer today, trusting God in all honesty with your life experiences and emotionse. You may want to use Rev. Epperly’s “Prayer of Awareness and Transformation:”

Holy Wisdom, Mother God, you hold my time in your hands. Your providence guides the stars and my cells. Your compassion opens my heart to healing in the midst of pain. Help me rest in you, trusting the future in your care and giving comfort to those who mourn, hurt, and face personal challenge. In Christ’s name. Amen. http://ow.ly/6MYY50zBiq7

Beginning Again

Enter into the quiet
that threshold of stillness.
In this very moment.
Take your time with eternity
Breathe it in
Feel the quickening
The awakening
of life
coursing through your being.

In this very place
Be.
Just be,
With your whole heart
and being
deep in heaven.
Learning afresh to dwell.

Herein lies our restoration
and rest in God.

It is new every morning
like fresh manna from heaven
like a breath prayer of thank you
As we receive
this living substance
this bread of life
we begin again.

The Vision of The Centre For Practical Spirituality

The vision of the CPS is to initiate inclusive, integrated, and intelligent explorations of spirituality.

We are deeply aware that many people self identify as “Spiritual” but not religious (SBNR). We are seeking to develop connections, teaching and practices that are less about “mindless” ritual and tradition and more about exploring personal ways of exploring deep connection to the divine. We are seeking to tap into ancient spiritual practices and make them relevant to new generations. Our hope is that through the teaching, presentation and practice of many traditions people will be enabled to find their own path to the divine.
