MERTHYR ROAD UNITING CHURCH –LABYRINTH MEDITATION WEDNESDAY 6 MAY 2020 AT 6PM

Last Saturday was World Labyrinth Day, so this evening we will follow the spiritual practice of virtually walking the labyrinth.

The Labyrinth is a walking meditation based on an ancient symbol of pilgrimage, making possible healing, self-understanding and an experience of centering in a setting of beauty, mystery and peace. Labyrinths far predate Christianity, but are often found in Christian surroundings, such as, for example, St John’s cathedral in Brisbane.

The Labyrinth is not a maze. There is no difficulty finding your way in a Labyrinth; you cannot get lost; there is a single, clearly marked that leads to the centre, while a maze has many tricks and dead ends. Walking the winding path helps to quiet and calm the mind, to encourage meditation, and to facilitate the inner journey of the mind or the soul.

How to Walk a Labyrinth
● there are no set rules
● walk with an open heart and mind
● take a few deep breaths before setting out
● walk at a natural pace, find your own rhythm
● experience the experience.

Three stages:
LET GO (walking in) – a great way to do this is to imagine yourself on a journey into the heart of God.
LET IN (at the centre) – here, it’s time to rest and listen to God’s voice of unconditional love for each one of us
INTEGRATE (walking out, reconnecting) – and now, in the light of Christ, we journey on with Christ in us as we go into our world to live in Christ.

Let us begin. This labyrinth is at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, Barton, Canberra.

Let us close by praying together –

The World Peace Prayer
Lead me from death to life,
from falsehood to truth;
lead me from despair to hope,
from fear to trust;
lead me from hate to love,
from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.

The Deer's Cry

PRAYER OF ST PATRICK MEDITATION

This prayer was composed by Saint Patrick in the year 433 AD. It is a beautiful prayer celebrating a God who lives with his children, guiding them, sheltering them, strengthening them. A God who is with us and in us through his Creation.

The Deer’s Cry (Breastplate of St Patrick) aka The Prayer of St Patrick

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun, Splendour of fire,
Speed of lightning, Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea, Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me, Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.

Christ shield me today
Against wounding,
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through the mighty strength
Of the Lord of creation.

"The Deer's Cry", attributed to St Patrick, is known by several names: "The Breastplate of St Patrick" and "Lorica" to mention two. It is a beautiful prayer ...

Let's prepare for tonight's meditation at 6pm

Throughout the world, lighting candles is a sacred ritual. We light a candle for many purposes: to illuminate darkness, dedicate prayers, solidify intentions, offer blessings, evoke Spirit, and/or to nourish grateful living.

We welcome you to the practice of lighting a candle; connecting you to inner stillness and to a global community.
Feel this connectedness. Slow your pace and offer these moments your full attention.

Please take three deep slow breaths and quieten your thoughts.

Light your candle.

Before continuing, reflect for a moment on your purpose for lighting this candle.

Together we can bring a bright light to our world.

Imagine all the candles alight right at this moment, all those who are silently meditating with us.

Wherever you are, feel the sense of peace and comfort as all this light transforms the darkness of the world at this time.

Take a moment to breathe in God's peace as we open ourselves to new life in Christ. Rest in the love which conquered death. That love can give us peace, and courage too, to live and praise God in all that we face and feel.

As we cannot meet and meditate together, tonight at 6pm we invite you to light a candle, sit in your sacred space, and join us across the spaces that separate for a time of silent listening.

Tonight's meditation will be shared at 6pm. We will post instructions on preparing yourself as you light your candle a few minutes before 6pm.

[04/25/20]   You are welcome to worship with us live at 9.30am
Stay in your PJs grab a coffee or tea and discover ....

God of Eternity,
before you generations fall and rise,
may you have mercy upon our foolishness and carelessness.
We remember the courage and patriotism of men and women
who resisted evil and defended freedom.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Help us to hold dear the freedom that was won,
may we use it wisely
so that many may live together in harmony
with confidence and hope.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
In Jesus name, Amen.

Here are the latest pictures of the church renovation. We love how it makes the stained glass windows stand out.
