Spirit in the City

Spirit in the City is an annual one-day conference held on a Saturday in October at QUT Gardens Point Campus and organised by QUT Catholics

The annual Spirit in the City Conference 2017, to be held on Saturday 7th October at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Gardens Point is being organised by QUT Catholics Conference Speakers: Archbishop Mark Coleridge Fr Douglas Yousef Al Bazi Dr Ryan Messmore Panel Discussion: Fr Adrian Sharp Father Lam Vu Jan Heath Teresa McGrath Ora Duffley And a performance by: The Australian Sacred Music Association Check out the program here: www.spiritinthecity.com.au/program/ Tickets: www.trybooking.com/RBGP Contact: Rev Deacon Russ Nelson [email protected] Ph: 0427 743 534 About the conference: Is faith simply a matter of the heart? Is it little more than private opinion with no bearing on the real-world? Is the notion of 'right' and 'wrong' an oxymoron, giving way to 'perspectives' and 'progressive thinking' as so many movies, books, the media, politicians et al hold? Does science or government or other hold sway for answers to all of life's questions? Could our churches and schools do a better job of equipping believers to bring faith to a world that fights it? Will the Christian faith survive unprecedented times of secular hostility? Penultimately, when the Son of God comes again, will He find faith on earth? Spirit in the City is one of Australia’s premier Christian conferences bringing together international and local leaders to tackle the big questions facing faith, culture and public affairs. To the big questions of life, the conference says a resounding - yes, that faith matters. YES, with Mary, the Mother of God, in obedience to God, to be fully committed to bringing Christ to the world. YES, to be beacons of faith, hope and charity to humanity that, however unknowingly, hungers for holiness and true flourishing. Spirit in the City is opened to all, not just students, and not only Catholics. It revives, as Vatican II revived, and as The New Evangelisation now proclaims, the timeless message: the Church is in service and sanctification of, the world in which it lives and its mission, in partnership with God, is to bring creation to full flourishing.

Mission: Spirit in the City welcomes all to the annual one-day conference - not just students, and not only Catholics.

Four recent changes in youth ministry:
1 With so many invites and media messages, young people need a personal invite and connection to come along.
2 Young people in the church are choosing their faith and not inheriting their faith.
3 Young people are looking for authentic connection
4 We need to build relationship with young people for the sake of the relationship. We are going to be there no matter what.

Spirit in the City – Annual conference on faith, public affairs and culture at QUT

Here's the pick of the questions being put to one of the most robust panel sessions on "Revitalising our Parishes", to be held at Spirit in the City (www.spiritinthecity.com.au).

1. Are our priests and ministers able to walk the line between encouraging congregations with mercy and compassion - and calling out the afflictions of modern living: people deeply fragmented by so many demands, choices and hyper-materialism; parents under increased work, time and monetary pressures, leading to the compromise of properly nurturing their kids; delay in commitment to marriage; digital natives growing up on ‘stage’, through social media and the cult of celebrity; record high marriage breakdown; sexualisation of culture etc.

2. Why don't our parishes engage in powerful public mission work, like we're seeing in Coalition for Marriage? Going beyond reading pastoral letters? Imagine the impact if Cherish Life, Australian Family Association, Australian Christian Lobby, Knights of the Southern Cross - seasoned public campaigners - had greater support through our parishes and churches?

3. A reading of Sacrosanctum Concilium, with its emphasis on Latin, Gregorian Chant, ad orientum etc., might give the impression of a restoration to the past. How can we understand renewal of liturgy in true light of the Council’s teachings, as opposed to a static restoration to 1962? Renewal, meaning something authentic and tied to tradition yet also dynamic and forward-looking?

4. In Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict called for a mutual enrichment of both forms of Mass, Extraordinary and Ordinary Form. There's plenty of opportunity to enrich the OF and bring into line with the Council's vision. What about OF enrichment of EF imply? Three year reading cycle? Can that work?

5. Youth ministry in Brisbane looks really vibrant compared to 15 years ago, e.g. Ignite conference, Young Adults Ministry, Frassati Australia – and ACYF. What about youth ministry at the parish level – what are the challenges?

6. A number of practical sources (e.g. Everett Fritz’s blog) contrast the socialisation focus of failed youth ministry with lasting successes involving: solid spiritual development and mentoring: e.g. bible study, apologetics, inspiration by example, available through saints and modern converts (e.g. Fr Douglas Calloway, Dawn Eden), regular participation in programs like Fr Lam’s, analysis of current affairs and church debates, mentoring youth to live virtuously, and mentoring parents of youth. Are these insights useful which could be further developed and shared with parishes?

Tell us what you think! We will share the panel Q&A at conference wider sharing and discussion!

The face of the Iraqi Christian genocide, Fr Douglas Bazi, sends an important message to Australians ahead of the SSM vote:

"Australians should not to ignore the upcoming vote on same-sex marriage because marriage is the cornerstone of family and of society. It is a great thing that Australians have a chance to vote on this as in some other countries, the government just passed law without consulting people. A vote against same-sex marriage is not against gay people, who deserve all our love and respect, being people just like ourselves. It is rather a vote for children”.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge

After the strong impact of Fr Hans Zollner’s visit I’d encourage you all not to miss one of our next international visitors - Fr Douglas Bazi, a priest who was shot and imprisoned by ISIS and has now become the international face of the Iraqi genocide. He will be making a keynote presentation at the upcoming Spirit in the City conference at QUT on Saturday October 7.

Although it is being hosted on a campus the conference is aimed at the whole community, not just university students.

It will raise the question of whether faith simply is matter of the heart. Is it little more than private opinion with no bearing on the real world? Is the notion of 'right' and 'wrong' an oxymoron, giving way to 'perspectives' as so many movies, books, the media, politicians hold? Does science or government or other hold sway for answers to all of life's questions? Could our churches do a better job of equipping believers to bring faith to a world that fights it? Will the Christian faith survive unprecedented times of secular hostility?

All of this will make for great spiritual fare on a spring day – I hope you’ll join me there in attending.
