The Brisbane Oratory in Formation

The Brisbane Oratory in Formation, established on 26 May 2015 by decree of Archbishop Coleridge, will be Australia's first Congregation of the Oratory.

In mid 2011 an inspiration to work towards establishing the first Australian Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri was conceived. This desire nurtured in prayer has begun to bear fruit. There remains much development and maturation to take place, but by the grace and providence of God we have made a solid beginning. Our emerging community has been called together by the Lord under the patronage of Our Lady, St. Philip Neri, Blessed John Henry Newman and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. We comprise Priests from different Australian Dioceses and two Seminarians who are in formation at the Toronto Oratory. The Priests of our community are grateful for the support and encouragement of our own Bishops. Our Bishops have shown a remarkable sense of unselfish generosity and a broad vision for the needs of the wider Church in Australia, rather than focusing only on their own immediate need for Priests in their Dioceses. Without the support of our individual Bishops an Australian Oratory would not be possible. The Lord’s providence has led us to the Archdiocese of Brisbane as our home or ‘Domus’. A permanent ‘home’ with all that it implies is integral to an Oratorian vocation, apostolate and rule of life. We are very grateful to Archbishop Mark Coleridge for warmly welcoming and encouraging us. We thank him for his support, confidence and vision in giving this project for Priestly community life a chance to succeed. The Archbishop is yet to decide exactly where our home will be in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. One consideration is likely to be the traditional Oratorian apostolate that inspires and unites us together with a common vision and sense of purpose. We seek to further the mission of the Church and give glory to almighty God through a focus on the Solemn Celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, the ministry of the Confessional and the formation of young people in the fullness of the Catholic faith. As Priests we seek to live an Oratorian community life, not for our own benefit, but that we may be better able to serve God’s people. We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the practical and prayerful support we have received from several long established Congregations of the Oratory from around the world. The Fathers of the London, Oxford and Toronto Oratories in particular have provided us with invaluable assistance and encouragement along the way. We sincerely thank them and look forward to the benefit of their continuing guidance and friendship. We invite you to please prayerfully support this new initiative for the Church in Australia in every way you can. We will provide periodic updates on our progress through the ‘latest news’ button of this website. Thank you for taking the time and having the interest to read about our Oratory project for Brisbane. Please do pray for us !

Holy Spirit Novena

Today many Catholics begin a novena, nine days of prayer, to the Holy Spirit. This is in imitation of the apostles who, after Christ ascended into heaven, gathered together in prayer for nine days after which the Holy Spirit descended on them which we will celebrate as we finish the novena for the Feast of Pentecost.

catholicnovenaapp.com The Holy Spirit Novena for the Seven Gifts is traditionally prayed leading up to Pentecost to celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Mary and the Apostles.

During today's Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, after the Gospel, which recounts Christ ascension into heaven, the priest snuffs out the Easter candle which has been lit for every Mass since Easter as a sign of Christ's earthly presence in those 40 days he spent on earth after his resurrection. Since on this day Christ ascended into heaven the Easter candle is snuffed out and will not be lit again during Mass.

Join the fathers and brothers as we begin our novena prayer this evening to St Philip Neri in preparation for his feast. Each evening we will be reciting the Prayer to St Philip by Cardinal Baronius:

Look down from heaven, Holy Father, from the loftiness of that mountain to the lowliness of this valley; from that harbour of quietness and tranquillity to this calamitous sea. And now that the darkness of this world hinders no more those benignant eyes of thine from looking clearly into all things, look down and visit, O most diligent keeper, this vineyard which thy right hand planted with so much labour, anxiety and peril. To thee then we fly; from thee we seek for aid; to thee we give our whole selves unreservedly. Thee we adopt as our patron and defender; undertake the cause of our salvation, protect thy clients. To thee we appeal as our leader; rule thine army fighting against the assaults of the devil. To thee, kindest of pilots, we give up the rudder of our lives; steer this little ship of thine, and, placed as thou art on high, keep us off all the rocks of evil desires, that with thee for our pilot and guide, we may safely come to the port of eternal bliss. Amen.

en.wikipedia.org Mary Immaculate Church is a heritage-listed Roman Catholic church located on the corner of Ipswich Road and Ferndale Street, Annerley, Queensland, Australia in the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

The church bell at Mary Immaculate is being rung every day at 12pm and 6pm for the Angelus Prayer, or during Eastertide, the Regina Caeli Prayer. For centuries the bells would call us to stop what we are doing and turn to God by reciting these prayers.

A common custom at the beginning of May is placing flowers as a crown on or before an image of Our Lady as this month is dedicated to her.

Bring flow'rs of the fairest,
Bring flow'rs of the rarest,
From garden and woodland
And hillside and vale;
Our full hearts are swelling,
Our Glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest
Rose of the vale.

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.
