Buddha Birth Day Festival

Buddha Birth Day Festival QLD One of Queensland's most prestigious cultural events. Promoting peace and harmony throughout our society. For the past 20 years, our goal has been to showcase the diversity of Australia’s multicultural society.

At the Buddha Birth Day Festival QLD, Southbank Parklands is lit up with red happiness and peace lanterns to signify the importance of happiness and peace on Earth. Visitors are able to enjoy the various multicultural performances held throughout the day, nibble on some of the finest vegetarian cuisine at our food and fun fair, become spiritually connected with themselves and the world at one of our blessing ceremonies, participate in cultural activities such as tea meditation and calligraphy and the list goes on! It is a Festival for everyone, regardless of age, religion or cultural background. Buddha’s birthday is the most significant day of the year for Buddhists, with celebrations for the birth, enlightenment and death of Sakyamuni Buddha, the Founder of Buddhism. For it his teachings that have given Buddhists the opportunity to truly understand the importance of happiness and peace within society. Since 1997, the Festival has been supported by the Brisbane City Council and Queensland State Government as well as our Corporate Partners. We are continually grateful for all of their support to make our festival one that has been known throughout Queensland as the cultural festival that is not to be missed. Venue: Courier Mail Piazza & Cultural Forecourt, Southbank Parklands (follow the lanterns!) Admission: Free of Charge

Buddhist Talk by Prof Janet Xiang-Yu Hou

Self-reflection: a practical tool to advance your career

Self-reflection is like looking into a “mirror” and describing what you see. It is a way of assessing yourself - your strengths and weaknesses. The “mirror” here means the people around you.

How to better use the “mirror” for self-reflection, and then to identify your strengths (and weaknesses) for your career advancement, including critical thinking skills and communication skills, will be covered in this presentation.

Equality in Humanistic Buddhism: a practical tool to reduce suffering

Master Hsing Yun said that “The most important messages within the BLIA verse are equality and patience, which represents the ultimate teachings of the Dharma.”

This presentation discussed the different interpretations of the concept “equality”, especially the equality among human beings as well as the equality between a good or bad outcome in life and work. The reasons of why we should not compare and cling to any “good” outcome in life and work are also presented.

【Fo Guang Shan 2020 Buddha’s Birthday Celebration-Virtual Bathing of the Buddha】

The Buddha’s Birthday Celebration commemorates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Sakyamuni Buddha, founder of Buddhism. Prince Siddhartha was born on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month over 2,550 years ago in Lumbini, Kapilavatsu in Northern India.

Legend has it that upon his birth, nine heavenly dragons appeared, streaming out the purest fragrant water to cleanse the newly born Prince. Hence, the Buddha’s Birthday Celebration is also known as the "Bathing the Buddha Celebration”.

After the Buddha’s Nirvana, it became a tradition to bathe the statue of Buddha to commemorate his birth while reflecting on one’s inherent Buddha nature. Bathing the Buddha is symbolic of cleansing one’s body, speech and mind to purge one’s greed anger and ignorance in order to cultivate wisdom and compassion.

Inline with current shelter-in-place policies, we welcome you to share in the joy of this auspicious occasion by joining us online for the Virtual Bathing of the Buddha via the link below.

May we purify our minds together, and with the blessings of the Celebration, pray that the COVID-19 pandemic will swiftly end so that everyone may be healthy and auspicious!
