Uniting Church in Australia

On this Sunday, the 19th of January 2020, Uniting Church congregations are invited to observe a Day of Mourning to reflect upon and lament the effect of the invasion and colonisation on Australia's First Peoples.

The Uniting Church acknowledges through the Preamble to the UCA Constitution, the dispossession, violence and decimation of First Peoples.

We lament the fact that as a Church and as Second Peoples we were and remain complicit.

Our decision to declare a Day of Mourning annually from 2019 is a way in which we stand together in Covenantal relationship with members of the UAICC - Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and all First Peoples - to honour, remember and acknowledge the truth of our history.

Resources for worship are available on the Assembly website.

Christmas blessings from President of the Uniting Church in Australia Dr Deidre Palmer.

As many Australians face a Christmas scarred by bushfires and drought, Dr Palmer urges us all to work together for life on Earth in her annual Christmas message.

“Jesus calls us to be agents of the love and care that he embodies. This call leads us to work compassionately for the life of our planet as well as the flourishing of all people.”

The annual video message features Uniting Church members taking part in September’s Global Climate Strike, drought-stricken farmers being cared for by Uniting Church agency Frontier Services, and coverage of Dr Palmer’s 2019 Uniting Church President’s conference in Nadi, Fiji.

Seven takes on Christmas from the Assembly Circles Thank you for your participation this year in the Assembly Circles of Interest. It has been wonderful to see the Circles grow and create new opportunities for people to connect with the national work of the Uniting Church.

Disaster chaplains like Rev Alimoni Taumoepeau are at the frontline of the pastoral response to the current #bushfires.

Please stay safe through the fire emergency and heatwave conditions, and look out for others around you who may be vulnerable.

Please keep the chaplains and everyone they are supporting in your prayers.

(And please consider how you might support their work.)

President Dr Deidre Palmer has recorded a pastoral message with Assembly National Disaster Recovery Officer Rev Dr Stephen Robinson on #NSWfires #Qldfires

For those whose loved ones have been lost or hurt, or for those who have lost property, we mourn with you.

For those in fire zones, please plan to stay safe. Your lives are precious.

For Uniting Church members, please keep chaplains who are working in evacuation centres in your prayers.

The NSW/ACT Synod has announced a Moderator’s appeal for fire-affected communities.

The National Disaster Relief Fund is also there to help disaster-hit communities for the long term, if you need to access it. Others may want to consider a donation to the Fund.

The Christmas theme this year is "Beyond expectations".

Moderator Rev David Baker reflects on how Christmas is a sign of hope that goes beyond our expectations. Mary and Joseph would discover that Jesus' life was beyond their wildest imaginings. The disciples who followed Him had their expectations blown apart.

We don't know how the story of Jesus will unfold in this generation but our hearts, minds and lives have been touched by the wonder of the birth of Jesus Christ. God has blessed us to bless others in a way that goes beyond their expectations. How can you be a blessing? 🤔

The Uniting Church in Australia turns 42 today. At the 10th Forum of the National Council of Churches in Australia, the President Dr Deidre Palmer spoke about the formation of the uniting identity and our journey of reconciliation before 65 church leaders gathered in Canberra over the weekend. The message of liberating hope was shared in this context of ecumenical movement.

The Uniting Church National History Society Biennial Conference opened up the question, “What does it mean to belong to the Uniting Church?”

While many UCA members grew up Congregationalist, Methodist or Presbyterian, some have only ever known the Uniting Church as their spiritual home. Others have transferred in from other denominations.

What does it means to find a home in a church that describes itself as evangelical and reformed and is at the same time committed to theological diversity?

A Minute of Appreciation was moved for Rev Kaye Ronalds, former Chair of the Queensland Synod Disaster Response and Community Recovery Committee for more than eight years.

“Her encouragement to key responders in the disaster meant that creative responses such as recovery chaplains in places without significant ministry, peer support, appropriate training for recovery chaplains, financial support to congregation responses, agency and congregation and local community resilience building could occur and the full impact never known.”

The minute of appreciation was received with a sea of orange cards and applause.

“Queensland, beautiful one day; disaster the next,” said Kaye in her response.

“We’ll continue to do what we can to make a difference to these really important times where we can engage with our community and have the people say, ‘Those Uniting Church people, wow, it was great to have them on board!’.”
