[02/28/20]   Thought and Prayer for Today

Verse of the day

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.

- 1 Peter 3:8 (NIV)

Voice of the day

Lent is a time of going very deeply into ourselves... What is it that stands between us and God? Between us and our brothers and sisters? Between us and life, the life of the Spirit? Whatever it is, let us relentlessly tear it out, without a moment's hesitation.

- Catherine Doherty

Prayer of the day

May the Holy Spirit bring us into a solidarity that respects our differenceness, celebrates our oneness in the love Jesus has for us, and commits us to do our best to make the lives of our neighbors better than our own.

[02/27/20]   Thought and Prayer for Today

Verse of the day

So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and God answered our prayer.

- Ezra 8:23 (NIV)

Voice of the day

[Fasting], is simply a way to make clear that we sufficiently reverence the amazing opportunity to ask help from the everlasting God, the Creator of the universe, to choose to put everything else aside and concentrate on worshiping, asking for forgiveness, and making our requests known.

- Edith Schaeffer

Prayer of the day

Creating, Redeeming, and Sustaining God, we call upon You to strengthen our resolve to repentance, fasting and prayer for your Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

[02/27/20]   Thought and Prayer for Today

Verse of the day

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

- Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Voice of the day

Going to God means tuning out the constant tumult crowding our heads in order to tune our hearts to quieter voices revealing God's holy intentions for this time.

- Reclaiming Jesus elders

Prayer of the day

Dear God — in this time of fear, hate, and violence, help us to come back to you — to truly follow your example and teachings. Amen.

[02/22/20]   Friendly reminder. We have a special congregational meeting today at 5.45 at the church. Come along 10 mins early if you can 🙂

[02/22/20]   Thought and Prayer for Today

Verse of the day

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

- Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV)

Voice of the day

If you worry about who is going to get credit, you don't get much work done.

- Dorothy Height

Prayer of the day

God, give us the endurance to continue to do good even when no one is looking, and especially when we may not receive the credit for it.

[02/22/20]   “God protects the foreigners among us. God cares for the orphans and widows, but God frustrates the plans of the wicked.”

—Psalm 146:9

There it is again: the reminder that God does not build walls, but God protects the foreigners among us. God does not slash the refugee program in half, but God cares for the orphans and widows. Let us also then rest in that last line of the verse: God frustrates the plans of the wicked.

Cara Meredith

[02/21/20]   “God opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. God loves the godly.”

—Psalm 146:8

Again, in a single verse, we see God’s heart for justice. Personally, I can’t get enough of the verbs – verbs that speak action of God’s present-tense actions, for God is justice. Justice opens the eyes of the blind. Justice lifts up those who are weighed down. Justice loves the godly. And when the text is read like that, well, then we’re also invited to see God with new eyes too.

[02/19/20]   Thought and Prayer for Today

Verse of the day

See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

- Isaiah 65:17 (NIV)

Voice of the day

Any real change implies the breakup of the world as one has always known it, the loss of all that gave one an identity, the end of safety.

- James Baldwin

Prayer of the day

God, to step into the new that you have for us, we must shed what belongs in the past. Whether it be old ideologies or people, be with us as we embrace change and anticipate what is to come. Amen.

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

- Hebrews 13:16 (NIV)

- Ibram X. Kendi

Prayer of the day

God, bring us to a place where we respond to our feelings by sacrificing some of our time and resources for the benefit of others.

[01/28/20]   World News This Week in Prayer

God has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does God require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8

Dear God,

Sometimes it feels that this world is full of so much chaos that we forget to take the time to talk to you even when we try to do the work you are calling us to do. As we come to you in these moments, we ask for your presence both in our own lives and for those who feel so far from you. We ask that you help us to spread justice in a world which is in so much need of peace.

Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

God, this week in the U.S. we celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a number of different ways. Some of us attended services and lectures to commemorate his life. Others read his speeches or read books to our children to remind us of the racism in our world which does not reflect the love and peace you call us to.

As we leave this week behind, we ask that you help us to bring these calls to act into the rest of the year so that we might be better doers of justice in your world.

Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

We ask for your presence all over China where an outbreak of the Coronavirus has killed your dear children. We ask for your presence there with both those suffering and those who feel trapped, knowing that they may fall ill because of this terrible illness. May the illness cease and may healing come.

Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

We remember this week the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. As we remember this horror, we ask that you continue to instill in us love for all people and a willingness to stand up for all. We ask for your presence and your love to overshadow such immense hate and lead us into being justice doers in such a broken world.

Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

We ask for your presence in Australia where the fires do not cease, and your beautiful creation continues to be destroyed. We ask that you be with your dear people who are now rendered homeless and for those who are continually hurt by the blazes. We ask that you help us to remember your dear children during this time.

Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

God, there are so many things that, although may be out of mind to some of us, are very real and horrific experiences in the lives of your children. Help us to listen more and to remember to continually do justice and spread love and peace in this often broken world.

May we be a congregation that is loving God by loving people – and when we say all people, may we mean it.
In your name we pray,

Amen.

God, give us visions of freedom that are committed to radical justice, truth, and love.

Our Story

Metropolitan Community Church Brisbane is part of the worldwide Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC). Founded by Rev Troy Perry in Los Angeles USA in 1968, Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) is an international Protestant Christian denomination with about 222 congregations in 37 countries. Although MCC welcomes all people into its membership, the church has a specific outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) families and communities. Worldwide, MCC has been a leading force in the development of queer theology and one of the first proponents of marriage equality. MCC pastors performed the first same-sex weddings in the USA and the UK in 1969. MCC’s prophetic witness has forever changed the face of Christianity, and helped to forward the international struggle for LGBT rights and equality.

Brief History

MCC Brisbane began as Christ Community Church in 1974 and became the Metropolitan Community Church Brisbane, part of the UFMCC, after the visit of Rev Troy Perry in 1975. MCC Brisbane has played an influential role in the gay rights movement, for example through its participation in gay law reform lobbying and demonstrations, assistance during the AIDS crisis and in the organisation of major LGBT activities, such as World AIDS Day and Brisbane Pride Festival events. MCC Brisbane is actively working for marriage equality legislation in Australia.

MCC Brisbane sees its role as both social and spiritual by standing up for the rights of minorities, particularly those of LGBT people. The church serves as a safe place to worship, fellowship and socialise with people of similar backgrounds.

MCC Brisbane Today

Our services at 7:00 pm each Sunday feature contemporary music and enthusiastic singing, preaching and a Communion service that is open to everybody. The informal worship style follows a regular format but features spontaneity and encourages congregational participation.

MCC Brisbane today moves courageously beyond the confines of what is accepted by the majority, and continually touches the lives of those in need. Whether it is food for the hungry, support for the disadvantaged or counsel for the hurting, MCC strives to meet the needs of a diverse community.

We believe that God is working to reconcile the world with the divine ideal. This encourages us to go on building an inclusive community that celebrates the diversity of God’s creation. MCC Brisbane has always expressed hope and we are confident that the church will continue to grow and carry the message of God’s love, especially to the LGBTIQ community.

Mission

Our mission at MCC Brisbane is to:

· provide a welcoming and sensitive worship environment

· express the reconciliation between God and the world, including the LGBTIQ community

· encourage each other to grow in faith

· foster involvement in social justice.

MCC Brisbane is on a bold mission to transform hearts and lives. We proclaim God’s inclusive love for all people and proudly bear witness to the integration of spirituality and sexuality. Just as Jesus did, we are called to:

· Do justice, show kindness, and live humbly before God (Micah 6:8)

· Explore life’s questions with open heart and minds

· Raise our voices in sacred defiance against religious (and political or systemic) exclusion

· Reach out to those with no hope

· Lift up new generations of remarkable, far-reaching spiritual activists.

Welcome

At MCC Brisbane, you will find people who are passionate about Jesus’ salvation and the love of God, and are not afraid of diversity and independent thought. Everyone is welcome to attend our church, make new friends, share in our fellowship, and to receive pastoral care.

Like the early church, we are a rainbow congregation. We believe that all people should have equal access and the opportunity to live life to the fullest extent, free from discrimination on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, race, age, physical challenge, health status, gender identification, nationality or economic situation.

Theology

MCC bases its theology on the historic creeds of the Christian Church, such as the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds. We celebrate the Communion service every Sunday, and practice open communion. Recipients do not need not be a member of MCC, or any other church, to participate. To read the MCC Statement of Faith, go to our website: www.mccbris.asn.au and click on “Beliefs.”
