MY DAILY MASS FOR OUR INTENTIONS

Dear members of our parish community,
Each day I offer my Mass for our intentions and sometimes for special intentions, for example, on Monday to pray for Fr Richard Guastella and his parish of St. Clare’s, Staten Island, New York.

I say Mass alone - on week days - either in our church of St. Joseph's or in the presbytery chapel. Often the time is 9am.
I invite you to be in prayerful solidarity with me, from your own home,
at this time - if you wish.

The image is from the first reading of the day for Monday - Acts 4:23-31:

'...and help your servants to proclaim your message with all boldness, by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles
and marvels through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’

In prayerful solidarity,
Fr Gerry

SAINT THOMAS & COVID-19‘
FR GERRY’S HOMILY - 19 April 2020
[https://www.stjosephsbrackenridge.com/homilies.html]

DOUBT
This year began in doubt
as so many doubted the scale and devastation
that the COVID-19 Pandemic would bring throughout the world.

As we turn to the Gospel today, we recall
that Saint Thomas is remembered for his doubting.

And remembered for his faithful reply
when Jesus appeared to him: ‘My Lord and my God’.
In some parts of the world Thomas is celebrated for his missionary work.
Members of our parish family from southern India sing his praises,
as they continue to spread the Good News of Jesus today.

We turn to Saint Thomas in his prayerful intercession for us.

GOSPEL OF JOHN 20:19-31
At the disciples’ first encounter with the Risen Jesus,
we hear these words of Jesus: “Peace be with you.’

‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’
‘Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them;
if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

Thomas missed the encounter,
and he didn’t believe the disciples when they told him about it.

Thomas said,
‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands,
and put my finger in the mark of the nails
and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

Thomas makes no mention of the change in manner of the disciples.
Perhaps his own doubts prevent him from seeing
the dramatic change in the other disciples
since they have received the Holy Spirit?

In the disciples’ second encounter with Jesus in the house,
Thomas is present. Jesus says to Thomas:

‘Put your finger here and see my hands.
Reach out your hand and put it in my side.
Do not doubt but believe.’

‘Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

SOLIDARITY
Jesus reaches out to us with hope.
Jesus did not give up on Thomas.
Jesus does not give up on us during this pandemic.

Jesus came back to the early community and addressed the unbelief of Thomas.
Inspired by our encounters with Jesus in community and personally,
we pray about the daily challenges and opportunities we now face.
We pray about the wounds of our world and their healing through Jesus.

Remembering that the disciples locked themselves in the room because of fear,
and that Jesus entered the room and healed their doubts and fears,
we pray that Jesus enters into our fears today and heals and frees us to love.

The last phrase of today’s Gospel passage says,
“And that through believing you may have life in his name.”
Through believing, let us live our life in Jesus.

REACHING OUT TO EACH OTHER
Following the example of Jesus, we reach out to each other.
During this past week we have had the privilege of being in prayerful solidarity
with Burnie Wynyard Catholic Parish during this tough time.

Our music team have chosen the hymns for today’s Mass,
and dedicate the communion hymn to the community of Burnie.

Let us now pray for the community of Burnie.
Alleluia.

An Interview with Pope Francis | Commonweal Magazine

AN INTERVIEW WITH POPE FRANCIS
‘A Time of Great Uncertainty’
By Austen Ivereigh

Toward the end of March I suggested to Pope Francis that this might be a good moment to address the English-speaking world: the pandemic that had so affected Italy and Spain was now reaching the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. Without promising anything, he asked me to send some questions. I picked six themes, each one with a series of questions he could answer or not as he saw fit. A week later, I received a communication that he had recorded some reflections in response to the questions. The interview was conducted in Spanish; the translation is my own.

“ Dear Lord, help me to be open to you now, and all this day. Believing that you are everywhere, may I sense your presence with me now. May I learn anew that you love to be with me. Amen.”

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.
As she wept, she bent over to lookinto the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet.
They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,
“Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Jesus said to her,
“Mary!”
She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher).

Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,
“I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. (John 20: 11 – 18 NRSV)

ERNEST
A MESSAGE TO THE PARISH FROM HIS DAUGHTER DEBBIE

Dear Parish Family,

Dad was farewelled at a private funeral service at the church of St Joseph and St Anthony, Bracken Ridge on the 14th April 2020 @ 2pm.

The service was attended by his immediate family, due to the current crisis and restrictions on the numbers that are allowed to attend.

We will hold a memorial service in his honour at a later date, once things are back to normal, and we are allowed to have large gatherings.

Our family would like to thank you very much for your cards, flowers and expressions of sympathy.

Your support at this difficult time is very much appreciated and is a great comfort to us all.

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless You.
Debbie, Stewart, Jackie and families.

AND FROM THE PARISH

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.

May Ernest's soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
